Iconic London Landmarks That Don’t Cost a Penny

Welcome back to The Boarding Pass Travel Blog, where London is its HQ. London may have a reputation for emptying wallets faster than a West End bar tab, but here’s the secret: much of what makes this city great won’t cost you a penny. You just need to know where to look. From world-famous galleries to skyline views that could rival any paid experience, this guide rounds up the very best places to explore the capital. And the best bit, they are all completely free.

Changing of the Guard, Buckingham Palace

There’s no ticket needed for this quintessentially British spectacle. The pomp, the military precision, the gleam of red jackets, it’s London theatre at its finest. Check the schedule before you go, as the parade days vary throughout the year.

Trafalgar Square & Nelson’s Column

This is a classic meeting spot for locals and tourists alike. With the National Gallery behind you and the city buzzing around, it’s the kind of place that reminds you why London has such timeless charm.

There are plenty of places to stand and enjoy the views. The pigeons aren't as bad as they once were. Why not stand behind Nelson's Column and get a great view of Big Ben.

Big Ben & the Houses of Parliament

things to do in London that are free

Few landmarks capture the essence of London quite like Big Ben. Standing tall beside the River Thames, its chimes have marked historic moments and ordinary mornings alike. The clock tower, officially known as the Elizabeth Tower, looks especially magical at dusk when it lights up against the night sky.

Why not stroll across Westminster Bridge for a perfect photo spot, or simply pause and take in the view of Parliament reflected in the water. It’s one of those moments that reminds you why London is timeless.

💡
Be sure to check the best time to wander down to Big Ben. There are lots of political protests these days.

Southbank Walk (Waterloo to Tower Bridge)

free London tourist attractions

Few places capture London’s rhythm like the Southbank. Street performers, book markets, skyline views, and if you time it right, a sunset over St Paul’s that will stay with you long after you’ve left. Walking along Southbank Walk is a favourite here at The Boarding Pass.

Free Museums You Can Lose Hours In

The British Museum
Ancient Egypt, the Rosetta Stone, Samurai armour, you could spend days exploring and still not see everything. Perfect for rainy afternoons or history buffs on a budget.

Natural History Museum

where to go in London for free

A true London icon. The grand hall, the blue whale, the dinosaur fossils, it’s a sensory overload in the best possible way. It's a museum that gets very busy, so be patient.

National Gallery
An art lover’s dream, sitting right on Trafalgar Square. Masterpieces by Van Gogh, Monet, and Turner, all without a ticket stub in sight.

Tate Modern
Industrial, bold, and forever thought-provoking. The Turbine Hall alone is worth the visit. Plus, the viewing terrace offers one of the best free views in London. The Tate Modern sits near Blackfriars Bridge, one of my favourite parts of the city.

London's Parks, Views & Secret Corners

Greenwich Park & the Royal Observatory Hill
Arguably one of London’s most beautiful views, sweeping across the skyline, with Canary Wharf and the Thames glinting below. Bring a picnic and stay for sunset.

Hampstead Heath & Parliament Hill
Wild, untamed and loved by Londoners. Perfect for those who prefer their city escapes with a bit of fresh air and mud underfoot.

Sky Garden
Book a free ticket online and ride the lift to the 35th floor of 20 Fenchurch Street (the Walkie Talkie). Lush greenery and sweeping views ,for zero pounds.

St Paul's Cathedral

things to do in London that are free

St Paul's is the most photographed building in my album. Even if you don’t step inside, St Paul’s is one of those places that stops you in your tracks. The dome dominates the skyline, gleaming above the City of London, and it’s particularly stunning when viewed from the Millennium Bridge or the One New Change rooftop terrace.

Wander the cobbled streets around Ludgate Hill and you’ll catch glimpses of its stone curves from every angle. It’s a masterpiece of symmetry and calm, a place where London seems to hold its breath.

💡
Pssssst. Attend the morning prayer at 07:30 for free, and marvel at Sir Christopher Wren's amazing design.

Little Venice & Regent’s Canal
A peaceful canal walk that feels a world away from the city. Watch narrowboats drift by and stop for a coffee at one of the quirky cafés.

London's Evening Strolls & Street Scenes

Borough Market
Vibrant, colourful, and buzzing with life. Wander through the market, snap some cool photos, and breathe in the scent of freshly cooked street food.

Southbank Buskers & Street Performers
After dark, this stretch along the river comes alive with energy, live music, magicians, and spontaneous dance battles. London at its most unpredictable.

Covent Garden Performers
From jugglers to opera singers, Covent Garden has hosted free street performances since the 17th century. Drop by, grab a bench, and enjoy the show.

Wrapping Up London's free attractions

Free London is the best kind of London, spontaneous, full of life, and open to anyone with a sense of adventure. So next time you’re in the city, skip the expensive attractions and try a few of these instead. Bring your camera, your curiosity, and an empty schedule. The rest will take care of itself.
